In 1993, Marie Kohler co-founded Renaissance Theaterworks (RTW) with four other women in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The company's mission is “to create moving theater that awakens our recognition of what it is to be human—from classics to world premieres—with attention to roles for women onstage and off.” It has become noted for creating theater “by women for everyone.”

Renaissance Theaterworks produces intimate and moving theater and has built a solid reputation for high-quality productions that have won recognition by critics and audiences for 25 years. It engages in new play development (Br!NK), arts advocacy projects, and community outreach through collaboration with other organizations.

RTW is a proud member of Theatre Communications Group (TCG), Theatre Wisconsin, and Third Ward Arts Association. It regularly receives funding from United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF), the city and county of Milwaukee, and the Wisconsin Arts Board, among others.

As Resident Playwright, Kohler has developed COUNTING DAYS, MIDNIGHT AND MOLL FLANDERS, BOSWELL'S DREAMS, and THE DIG with the support and collaboration of Renaissance Theaterworks.
